The Adventures of the Abrafaxe

MOSAIK-Series-Overview

In the Orient

from Issue-Nr. 550
starts in Baghdad; approx. 800 AD
published October 2021 – today

In Europe, the Franconian king Charles succeeded in expanding his empire far to the east and spreading the Christian faith there by force. This is not the only reason why Pope Leo III crowns him emperor in Rome. Empress Irene in Constantinople does not like to hear this, because for centuries the imperial dignity has been linked to the metropolis on the Bosporus. In Baghdad, however, the caliph Harun al-Raschid rules. Neither the Franks nor the Byzantines can compete with his empire. Baghdad is a centre of trade, science and culture. Harun has long been at war with Empress Irene. That is why Charles hopes to win the Caliph of Baghdad as an ally and sends an envoy to the far-off Caliph's kingdom.

Adventure Oceania

18 issues (Issue-Nr. 532–549)
takes place in the south Pacific; at the end of the 19th century
published April 2020 – September 2021

After many years of adventures in the northern hemisphere, the Abrafaxe have now literally moved to the other end of the world – the mysterious world of the South Pacific. Here, people live in small communities on islands and atolls hundreds of kilometers apart. Their cultures differ not only very much from what the Abrafaxe know from Europe, but often also from each other. The inhabitants of these islands also experienced something unusual at the time: the number of Europeans and Americans who immigrated skyrocketed – especially because the newly founded German Empire had declared parts of the South Pacific to be its so-called "protected area". The breathtaking nature of these islands often gives the impression that they are a long-lost paradise. But the Abrafaxe experience first-hand what changes life in the South Pacific is undergoing at that time.

The Abrafaxe at the time of the Hanseatic League

25 issues (Issue-Nr. 507–531)
takes place in Germany, England, Russia, Flanders as well as the Baltic and North Sea; around 1400
published March 2018 – March 2020

Since the 12th century, the Hanseatic League rose to become an important player for power in the Lower German regions. As a merchant covenant it enforced trading privileges on its members and did not hesitate to use political and even military means when these privileges were threatened. Not only towns on the Baltic Sea were a part of the Hanseatic League. In the entirety of Lower Germany towns belonged to the covenant. For a long time Cologne was the largest Hanseatic city. In its heyday the Hanseatic League had many hundred members. The heart of the covenant was Lübeck. The cultural influence of the Hanseatic League should not be underestimated either. That's why most of the cities in the Baltic region, that were founded at that time, took on the Lübeck law. Cities' main churches were often modeled after Lübeck's main church of St. Mary.

The trade routes of the Baltic Sea were dominated by the Hanseatic League. Salt from Lüneburg was an important commodity. Salt was used all over the shores of the Baltic Sea to preserve the rich herring catches.

The Hanseatic League also traded outside of Lower Germany. The most important branches were the Stalhof in London, the Peterhof in Novgorod in Russia, as well as the offices in Flanders Bruges and Bergen in Norway.

So called "Hanseatic Days" took place regularly until the 17th century. At these meetings, discussion were held and binding decisions for all members were made. In 1669, the Hanseatic cities met for the last time. The Hanseatic League was never dissolved.

The End of the Middle Ages

24 issues (Issue-Nr. 483–506)
takes place in Germany; 1517–1522
March 2016 – February 2018

The early sixteenth century is a time of great change. Columbus discovered America. English, Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese fleets sail the oceans and the world as it is known is widening. In Torun, Poland, Nikolai Copernicus announced that the earth was not the center of the universe. It is supposedly a planet like Venus, Mars and Jupiter and circles just the same around the sun. But hardly anyone believes in this thesis, which is so obviously contradictory to common sense. In Mainz Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press with movable type and downright triggered a media revolution. More and more people can now read, because books and pamphlets are much cheaper than the documents that were copied by hand. Great sovereign princes organize magnificent jousting tournaments, but the great time of knights is long gone. Now fighting on the battlefields are armies of mercenaries. The Roman Church emerges in an unprecedented magnificence. The great painters, sculptors and architects are in the service of the popes. To finance this luxury so-called letters of indulgence are sold. Slips of paper with the papal seal, which absolve the buyer of his sins and allegedly spare him the agony of limbo. That displeases many believers. In Electoral Saxonian Wittenberg an Augustinian monk tries to prove in 95 theses that the sale of indulgences is an aberration.
And in this very exciting time the Abrafaxe appear unexpectedly. From central German Mansfeld they plunge into a new incredible adventure.

The Abrafaxe take on Ancient Rome

24 issues (Issue-Nr. 459–482)
takes place in the Roman Empire; 100 A.C.
published March 2014 – February 2016

In a Germanic village near the border of the Roman Empire the Abrafaxe meet Spurius Superbificius Spontifex who wishes to establish an entirely new kind of circus with his crew: Instead of chariot races, gladiator fights and animal hunts he and his circus cew want to inspire their audience with acrobatics, dance and dressages. Sometimes this works more and sometimes less. The world seems to not yet be ready for the Spontifex' art. At the same time in distant Rome there are disputes among the advisers of the Emperor Trajan over the future Germania-policy. To seal the peace with the Germanic tribes, two children of the Germanic princes are invited to Rome. What the circus staff and the Abrafaxe have to do with the whole situation and which path eventually leads to Rome, you will learn in this new adventure series.

takes place in Australia; around 1847
published March 2013 – February 2014

The Abrafaxe landed in Sydney, the year 1847. Actually the three of them only wanted to earn some money to leave Australia as quickly as they can. Just when they have gotten the money for the trip passage to India together the story unfolds. Misfortune happens at a farewell dinner in the best restaurant in town: Their money got stolen. The Abrafaxe must temporarily remain in Australia. Luckily, they found a helpful hand in the Bingleys, a farming family, that desperately needs them to work on their sheep farm. The Bingleys also know more about the legendary treasure of Kenneth Sinclair. The Abrafaxe got to know him as a picky officer from their circumnavigation of Australia with Matthew Flinders. After years of futile searching no one except for his former housekeeper - who is, significantly, known as "Mad Melissa" throughout the city - believes in this treasure. But when he hears about it, Abrax is utterly convinced ...

... IN NORTHERN AFRICA

There are plenty of hazards and exciting events. At first, cousin Don Alfonso, who has been poisoned, must be cured. Then, the Abrafaxe are supposed to rescue a Hakim's daughter who has been kidnapped. Again their archenemy Don Ferrando is in on it and causes distress, e.g. when they are searching for the secret of the genie in a bottle. Their journey leads them through a magical oriental world full of secrets and unexplainable events, via the pyramids of Egypt to Mesopotamia, where the miraculous storyteller Hodscha Nasreddin takes care of them.
