Jürgen Kieser

Jürgen Kieser was known primarily as the creator of the two mice Fix and Fax. Their stories were published from 1958 until his retirement in 1987 in the monthly comic magazine ATZE. In total Jürgen Kieser thus created 350 episodes. The Fix & Fax adventures with their rhyming verses are in best German comic tradition. Jürgen Kieser thus creating a timeless work which inspires children to this day.
Jürgen Kieser was born on 20 August 1921 in Berlin-Strausberg. He later moved to Neu Zittau in Brandenburg, where Kieser still lives to this day. After graduation he could perfect his masterful, precise line in technical drawings during his studies. During the second world war Kieser was a flyer at first, then a flight instructor in the Air Force – his flight enthusiasm would later shine through again and again in his stories. For example when Fix and Fax were gifted a red airplane by their cousin Fex and experienced with this a number of adventures. After the war his drawing ability helped him to provide for himself and his family - making portraits of the occupiers and drawing postcards. Later he worked as a commercial artist in the international trade chain HO. When, after the uprising of the 17th June 1953 in the GDR began some political thaw, next to the MOSAIK two additional children's magazines Fröhlich seine und singen (Frösi) and ATZE were founded. In both Jürgen Kieser was present with picture stories, crafting tips and cover illustrations from the start. For ATZE he invented and drew the title character, a Berlin-based boy under the same name, when it was later based on stronger political influence (he got a pioneer scarf etc.) Kieser gave up ATZE and gave him to other colleagues. But also "serious" newspapers like the Wochenpost put up children's comic pages by Jürgen Kieser. When he offered a mice story to the ATZE editorial staff at the end of 1957, he had no idea that this creation would shape his life decisively. The reader response has been emesely positive, so that from then on every month it was followed by other adventures. Overall, he created well over a thousand pages. But these mice remained by no means his only work. Even as a cartoonist he started making a name for himself with many an incisive drawing. In 1983 he even received the unofficial Humoristenpreis of the GDR, the "Eddi" trophy – an honor of which he is particularly proud of. After his retirement in 1987, there was no silence in and around Jürgen Kieser. Anthologies with his adventures mice appeared in the publishing house Junge Welt at first. From 1994, our publishing house (MOSAIK) issued a twenty-five-volume collector's edition, which first contained all of the adventures of Fix and Fax. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, almost as a conclusion of this series, "The Jürgen Kieser Book" appeared with an overview of his entire work as an illustrator and author. Since most of the collector's editions are out of print, we now publish the Fix and Fax adventures in a new, inexpensive softcover edition. Volume 12 and therefore the last of these "Collected Adventures" just arrived. Also new since the Leipzig Book Fair 2011 are five Pappbilderbücher with Fix and Fax for the little ones.

Klein, drollig und voller Charme [...] Mosaik ist ein Stück Leben.

Mitteldeutsche Zeitung
